Music for Passiontide

.

Saturday 7th April   2.30pm

Pitt St Methodist Church

.

The suffering and ultimate sacrifice that Jesus Christ made for us on the cross, has inspired generations of composers to write some of the most sublime music of all time. Grinding dissonances and ethereal floating phrases characterise much of this music. Works by Blow, Lotti, Tallis, Purcell, Sheppard, Handl, Victoria and Palestrina’s Lamentations for Holy Saturday.

La Resurrezione is one of Handel's most original, spectacular and richly orchestrated oratorios. Recorders, trumpets, and a viola da gamba are all required, additional to the usual strings and woodwind. Fiery interchanges abound between Lucifer and an Angel with appropriately thrilling musical effects. The opening arresting aria sung by the Angel is breathtaking in its demands of the singer and orchestra. Florid, almost never-ending roulades seemingly defy the very capabilities of the human voice as the Angel demands to be let into the gates of Hell. Lucifer responds by calling up the furies of Hell in retaliation. Mary Magdelene, Mary Cleopus and St John all have exquisite arias of anguish as they lament the death of Christ. The oratorio ends with a delightfully happy chorus as Jesus appears to Mary Magdelene and they learn of his resurrection.
