Almirena - Gina Sanders

Almira - Emma Sloman

Argante - Chalium Poppy

Rinaldo is the first opera Handel produced for the English public a year after his arrival in London in 1711. It is a tale of magic and sorcery, love and scheming with sublime arias. There are many famous arias in this exceptional work from the plaintive 'Laschia ch'io pianga' to what is reputed to be Handel's own favourite aria: 'Cara sposa'. The original performances used spectacular special effects from fire-breathing dragons to flocks of live sparrows being released into the audience!

Israel in Egypt is a spectacular feast of epic choruses! Many of which are for double choirs singing antiphonally, which makes for stunning effect. The story of the Israelites is told from their oppression under the Egyptians, to freedom through the parting of the Red Sea with Moses. All the terrible plagues are set to music brilliantly from hailstones and fire lashing down, to frogs in the king's chambers and swarms of flies and locusts "in all their quarters"! As always we have an enviable line-up of exceptional soloists, a polished quire and a fine band featuring 3 trombones as well as trumpets and timpani. This is one of only a handful of works Handel wrote with trombones.
